The lecture situates Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel Klara and the Sun (2021) within cultural theoretical reflections following the nonhuman turn. The novel’s use of a homodiegetic, internally focalized perspective through the humanoid Klara does not merely adapt a classical form of humanist self-exploration. Rather, by alienating this perspective through the adoption of a technical entity, the novel stages it as a constructed device. ‘Humanity’ and ‘subjectivity’ are revealed as feedback effects of a narrative process, traditional dichotomies are unsettled and blended in an innovative way.
