We are excited to announce our conference entitled “BrAIve New Worlds?! Literature in the Age of Artificial Intelligence – Concepts, Genres, and Model Interpretations” which is organised by the Centre for Cultural Studies and will take place at the Department for English Studies from June 19 to June 21, 2025. The conference will delve into one of the most fascinating and impactful topics of our time: the intersections of artificial intelligence and literature.
From AI-generated poetry to interactive narratives and machine-assisted literary analysis, artificial intelligence is transforming the way we write, read, and interpret literature. This conference will critically engage with these developments, exploring the cultural, social, and political implications of AI in literary production and reception. During the conference, we will try to map this evolving landscape from an interdisciplinary perspective.
On this occasion, we are delighted to welcome N. Katherine Hayles (Los Angeles) as our keynote speaker. She has been at the forefront of researching the intersections of AI, literature, culture, and the humanities for the past decades. Her latest and recently published monograph, Bacteria to AI. Human Futures with our Nonhuman Symbionts, tackles the question we are all asking ourselves: what might our AI-infused future look like. We are also happy to confirm further distinguished speakers, including Piotr Mirowski (Google DeepMind/London), Hannes Bajohr (Berkeley), Claudia Benthien (Hamburg), and Liam Jarvis (London).
Save the date and stay tuned for updates on the full programme and more information on the event and our speakers. We look forward to engaging in thought-provoking discussions about the brAIve new (literary) worlds shaped, co-created, and most definitely influenced by artificial intelligence.
