The Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) is currently inviting early-career researchers to apply for the JESH programme, which promotes international academic collaboration through short-term research stays. The programme supports both incoming researchers from selected countries conducting research in Austria and outgoing researchers from Austria conducting research abroad.
JESH is open to researchers who completed their PhD no more than ten years ago and are currently affiliated with a university or non-university research institution in Austria or one of the 61 eligible countries. The initiative is designed to strengthen bilateral research partnerships and promote sustainable academic exchange.
Successful applicants receive a monthly stipend of €2,700 for a research stay of one to six months. The funding is intended to cover travel, accommodation, and living costs. Research stays must begin within six months of notification of funding approval, with earliest possible starts in early 2026.
Applications must be submitted in English via the online platform by 16 September 2025. Required documents include a CV, publication list (highlighting up to five key publications), a completed applicant questionnaire (template provided), confirmation of employment from the home institution, a signed host institution form, and a detailed research exposé (maximum five pages). Further information, relevant forms, and other application material can be found here.
Applications are evaluated in a two-step process: first by the JESH committee, then by external experts. The selection is based on academic quality and the potential for long-term international cooperation. Final decisions will be made by December 2025.
