How is artificial intelligence reshaping literature? From machine-generated poetry to AI-driven storytelling and non-human authorship, the rapid developments in AI are transforming the ways we write, read, and interpret texts. The international conference "BrAIve New Worlds?! Literature in the Age of Artificial Intelligence – Concepts, Genres, and Model Interpretations" will critically explore these developments and their cultural, aesthetic, and political implications.
The conference will take place from June 19 to June 21, 2025, at Heinrichstraße 36 and bring together scholars, writers, and researchers from various disciplines to discuss the profound shifts AI is causing in literary production and interpretation. How does AI influence storytelling, literary genres, and the very notion of authorship? How do these technological transformations impact literary value, originality, and creative agency? And what broader cultural and ethical questions arise from the integration of AI into literary practices? It is these and similar questions that the conference will strive to come to terms with.
A particular highlight of the conference will be the keynote lecture by N. Katherine Hayles (UCLA), entitled "Communicating with Aliens. Large Language Models as Writer/Reader/Critic." In addition to the keynote, the conference features a wide range of talks and panels on timely and thought-provoking topics. A full overview of the speakers and sessions can be found in the conference programme.
